Program Overview:

The mission of the ESL Career Institute is to increase the opportunity for ESL students, and students who speak a language other than English at home, to enter professional careers through accelerated English language acquisition in programs at North Shore Community College. The staff of the Institute works with students on career and academic planning. The ESL Career Institute works with departments and divisions from across the college to create innovative programs that help students learn about careers and support students’ course work.

ACES (Additional Course Experience and Support) is an ESL Career Institute program that pairs Developmental Reading and Writing courses with specific college level, 3 credit, career courses, such as The Body in Health & Disease and Health Careers Seminar for students interested in careers in the health sciences professions.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Speak a language other than English at home
  • Placed in Level 1 reading & writing
  • Interested in the specific career
  • Dedicated to learning and being a successful college students

Courses are linked by assignments and faculty interaction, and the students receive intensive course support through lab time and are exposed to both the Danvers and Lynn campuses.  Other benefits to the student include:

  • Career and academic advising
  • Learning about specific careers from North Shore Community College faculty

In addition to ACES, the ESL Career Institute offers workshops and guest speakers to ESL department classes on a range of topics such as: Orientation to college services, career options, career exploration, and job search steps. Staff at the ESL Career Institute work with all eligible students and potential students on:

  • Academic advising
  • Career advising
  • Resume development
  • Filling out job applications
  • Interviewing preparation
  • Allied Health program applications

Best Practices:

-Linked courses. For example, a project on nutrition in The Body in Health & Disease will be worked on in both the reading and writing courses.  The assignment will be graded for content in the BIO class and graded for writing in the writing class.

-After students complete ACES, they continue to access the ESL Career Institute for additional career and academic advising and continued support.

Areas of college access it addresses:

Academic Readiness—ACES            works to help students become communications proficient, and prepare for success in specific fields.

Social Readiness—Through ACES and individual advising, students receive one-on-one support that helps them understand what it is to be a college student and how to plan for post-North Shore Community College.

College Information Awareness—Students are exposed to the different programs and faculty in career fields at North Shore Community College helping them choose the right career path for them.
