By nature of being educational institutions, all schools in Lynn, private or public, are directly connected to addressing issues of college access. However, much regarding a student’s awareness of post-graduation options concerns the high school guidance departments. This document highlights some of the efforts of Lynn public high school guidance departments, although the list is not exhaustive, as there is much being done that, due to time restraints, did not get documented.
Classical High:
College access programs and resources available to Classical High School students:
-Alumni mentoring program in which Classical High School alumni mentor current students.
-General Electric Tutoring Program—employees of General Electric come to Classical and tutor students in math, science, and foreign language
-Volunteer Service Program—gives students volunteer opportunist to enhance college resumes and expose students to various aspects of the community.
-Rotary Youth Leadership program for sophomores and juniors
-College financial counseling offered free by a volunteer from Personal Finance Management
-High School Success course for freshman that covers study skills, critical thinking, analytical reading, and personal finance.
-Collins Writing Program which incorporates writing in every class
-College campus and college fair visits
-Guidance department offers mock interviews, guidance in computer skills, and networking with volunteer opportunities
Lynn English High School:
College access programs and resources available to Lynn English High School students:
-Junior and senior class packets that detail post high school graduation options, college application timeline, and provide resources for applying to and preparing for higher education.
-A speaker series on “Making College Count” for juniors and seniors
-A partnership with connect.edu, a website which allows parents, students, and teachers to see students’ progress on college applicatons.
-Juniors and seniors are taken to a college fair in Boston and English hosts a career fair
-Two FAFSA nights with instructions on FAFSA applications and admissions processes
-Monthly newsletters containing higher education information and scholarship information
-College Prowler Series, a book series which highlights colleges from students’ perspectives and is available for English students to use in the English guidance department
