Igniting the Mind:
Program Overview:
Dr. Bryan Auday, a Gordon College psychology professor, and several of his students each year lead a four day after school intensive study on the brain at various local high schools. The fifteen high school students learn about neuroscience by dissecting sheep brains and interacting with high tech equipment, including electroencephalograms. Students are able to record their own brain waves using this instrumentation. The objective of this annual program is to introduce Lynn youth to the exciting world of behavioral science.
Areas of college access it addresses:
Academic Readiness—The four-day workshop is intensely academically engaging as students explore the brain at a high academic level. This gives the students a taste of what college academic life is like.
Social Readiness—Working with Dr. Auday and his students, allows the Lynn students to interact with a college professor and college students in a classroom-like environment.
