Organization Overview:
The mission of La Vida Inc. is to assist the Hispanic of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese to care for the spiritual and material needs of the Spanish speaking in the greater Boston area.
La Vida Y.E.S., Youth Enrichment Services:
La Vida Y.E.S. is a program for middle and high school students grades 6th-10th. . The program not only helps students academically, but also builds leadership and lifts the self-esteem of every one of the students. In La Vida Y.E.S., each student is free to express any concern or opinion. It focuses on the development of communication because it resolves conflict. Parent participation contributes that extra mile to make La Vida Y.E.S. unique in every way. La Vida Y.E.S. offers:
-Homework support -Painting
-Computerized MCAS Prep -Sports
-Math Club -Cooking classes
-Reading Club -Sewing classes
-E.S.L. Club -Good manners classes
-Religious classes -Leadership
-Art -Robot Construction
The program is made up of friendly faces that are willing to help students with homework, study habits, and, best of all, developing positive role models. La Vida Y.E.S. is combined of many different personalities (professionals, college students, parents, grandparents, and people for the community), and its doors are open to people who are willing to make a difference in a youth’s life.*
La Vida Scholars:
La Vida Scholars is new program of La Vida Inc. designed to help students make educated and informed decisions about college, as well as to provide them with the academic and financial support they need. La Vida Scholars is for Spanish-speaking, honor roll students in Lynn. Students receive mentoring in making their college decisions, academic support, including SAT prep, and a $10,000 grant, to assist in paying for college. La Vida Scholars will in turn mentor the youth of La Vida Y.E.S. The staff of La Vida Scholars will also work directly with the students’ families, education them on how to be engaged in their child’s college decision-making process.
Best Practices:
-La Vida Scholars is addressing the problem of frozen in-state tuition which has led to a flux in college fees, by providing students with a grant to cover fee costs.
-La Vida Y.E.S. and La Vida Scholars works directly with parents, helping them to be engaged in their child’s educational experience
-La Vida Inc. focuses on the Latino community, addressing its needs as the largest ethnic group in Lynn.
Areas of college access it addresses:
Academic Readiness—La Vida Y.E.S. provides homework support, MCAS prep, and academic enrichment, while La Vida Scholars assists with SAT prep.
Social Readiness—Both La Vida Y.E.S. and La Vida Scholars include a mentoring component to help encourage healthy decision making in the participants.
College Information Awareness—La Vida Scholars participants will be educated in their post high-school options and the details of each, i.e. the difference between a two and a four-year college, a private and a public university etc.
Financial Awareness—The $10,000 grant, La Vida Scholars participants receive will help relieve some of the financial burden that comes with attending a higher education institution.
