The New American Center:

Partnership Overview:

The New American Center is an after-school ESL enrichment program that targets approximately thirty-five middle and high school refugee children. Gordon students partner with small groups or one-on-one to foster relationships and build English language skills via tutoring and homework assignments as well as supplementary Lynn schoolteachers’ suggestions.

Areas of college access it addresses:

Academic Readiness—Gordon students tutor students in various academic subjects helping them comprehend and master necessary academic skills.

Social Readiness—The interaction of Lynn youth with Gordon students gives the youth a unique opportunity to spend one-on-one time with college students. In the course of their conversations, children of Lynn are able to hear about the college experience, as well as ask any questions they may have about college preparation or life.
