Program Overview:

Project ENABLE is a transition-to-college program for GED recipients attending North Shore Community College. It is a one semester program, affording GED recipients the opportunity to earn nine college credits in a supportive community learning environment. In a cohesive academic and personal coursework program, Project ENABLE students take College Writing Basics or College Composition I, College Success Seminar, and Personal Development Courses during an evening schedule. Academic and personal support services include:

                                                                        --College Advisement

                                                                        --Registration

                                                                        --Adjustment to College

                                                                        --Time Management

                                                                        --Basic Computer Skills

                                                                        --Academic Tutoring

                                                                        --Library and Research Skills

                                                                        --Career Advisement

                                                                        --Career Planning

                                                                        --Cultural Activities*

Best Practices:

-Working within a learning community which gives students a feeling of community and breaks down feelings of isolation students may feel.

-Offering a cultural enrichment component, usually consisting of seeing a professional production at no cost to the student, and then integrating the performance into the academics of the class.

Areas of college access it addresses:

Academic Readiness—the courses offered, as well as services offered, such as academic tutoring, library and research skills, and time management instruction, help students reach academic success

Social Readiness—The structure of working within a community learning environment offers students a system of support to help encourage college success.
