Project YES:
Partnership Overview:
Project Y.E.S. is an after-school program for children in fifth through eighth grade who are at-risk for gang involvement. The goal of the program is to give the kids a structured, fun alternative to hanging out on the streets and being influenced to join gangs. Gordon students, alongside of volunteers from North Shore Community College, provided one on one tutoring for the children, led recreational activities and set examples as positive role models. The kids involved in the program also learned lessons on leadership development, career development and social development. The Gordon mentors provided a listening ear for the children in the program and developed some good friendships over the course of the semester.
Areas of college access it addresses:
Academic Readiness—Gordon students tutor students in various academic subjects helping them comprehend and master necessary academic skills.
Social Readiness—The interaction of Lynn youth with Gordon students and NSCC students gives the youth a unique opportunity to spend one-on-one time with college students. In the course of their conversations, children of Lynn are able to hear about the college experience, as well as ask any questions they may have about college preparation or life.
