Program Overview:

            TRIO/Student Support Services (TRIO/SSS) helps students succeed at North Shore Community College, earning their associate’s degree or transferring to a four-year college or university. The program supports 350 students. Students receive tutoring, academic advising, and other services that support academic success. TRIO/SSS offers seminars, social activities, a Linked Learning program and individual support.

            TRIO/SSS also seeks to help students have a well-rounded higher education experience through special event programming such as a yearly, low-cost trip to New York, community service projects, and a film series. These events help(s-delete) students balance academic rigors with fun. Students are eligible to participate in the program as long as they meet at least ONE of the following criteria:

1. Meet federal low income levels

2. First Generation College Student - neither parent having earned a bachelor's degree

3. A documented learning or physical disability.*

Program benefits and services include:

-Linked Learning, a program which offers coordinated course curriculum, peer support, small class sizes and an ideal schedule.  Three groups of courses are available.

-Fall Semester: College Writing 2, College Reading 2, College Success Seminar

            -Fall & Spring Semester: Composition I, Speech

-Spring Semester: Composition II, Psychology

-Academic advising

-Free, individual tutoring

-Career planning

-College transfer assistance

-Financial aid information

-Seminars on study skills, stress management, career-decision-making, etc.

-Counseling support

-Cultural activities

           

Areas of college access it addresses:  

 

-Academic Readiness— TRIO/SSS offers tutoring, seminars on study skills, stress management, etc., and a Linked Learning program to prepare students for academic success in higher education

 

-Financial Readiness—Eligible TRIO/SSS students may receive TRiO Grant Aid assistance in conjunction with their financial aid package. 

 

-Social Readiness—Special event planning helps TRIO/SSS students balance academic and social life in college.

 

Note:  TRIO/SSS is also offered at North Shore Community College’s Danvers campus.
