Program Overview:

Tech Prep is a federally funded initiative under the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Act of 1990. Under this act, grants have been made to consortia of local educational agencies and post-secondary institutions for the development of career pathways to a two year associates degree, a two year certificate or further post secondary education.

North Shore Tech Prep establishes articulation agreements between high schools and post-secondary institutions, establishing links between high school course work and college programs, creating opportunities for students to earn college credit while still in high school.

Various seminars and career exploration days are planned throughout the year to expose high school students to a variety of career options and to assist them in making informed academic and professional decisions.

Lynn Classical High School, Lynn English High School, and Lynn Vocational Technical Institute are members of the North Shore Tech Prep Consortium.*

Best Practices:

-Tech Prep offers a scholarship each year to a low-income tech prep student, as well as, advising students in financial aid issues.

-Participants are given career exploration opportunities through visits from professional speakers.

Areas of college access program addresses:

Academic Readiness—Participants can earn college credit and are exposed to career possibilities. In addition, Tech Prep students can take the Accuplacer/Computerized Placement Test (CPT) at any time.

College Information Awareness—Students come to North Shore Community College and are exposed to a college environment, faculty, and the admissions process.

Financial Awareness—Tech Prep offers a scholarship for a low-income participant and offers financial aid advising.
