Program Overview:
North Shore Upward Bound is a TRIO Program that consists of caring and supportive staff dedicated to transforming the lives of low income, first generation college-bound Lynn high school students. Together with their families, they prepare and empower students to complete their secondary and post-secondary education successfully through academic teaching and tutoring, personal development, counseling, cultural awareness, and community involvement. Upward Bound works with 70 students to provide free of charge services such as:
-- Tutoring at North Shore Community College
--Classes on essay writing, public speaking, and SAT preparation
--Assistance with college and financial aid applications
--Connections with the community through volunteer services
--Opportunities to attend cultural and sporting events
--A six-week Summer Component with classes and a residential college experience.
Upward Bound students must be enrolled in a Lynn junior high or high school, meet federal low-income guidelines and/or be a future first-generation college student. Wads of the state are eligible to apply. Applications are available from school guidance counselors, the Upward Bound office at North Shore Community College, or by mail request.
Best Practices:
-A six-week summer program for Upward Bound participants. The program is designed to be a simulation collegiate experience and students attend classes on a college campus as well as spend part of the program living in college residences.
-Upward Bound counselors meet with the senior class once a week to help begin the college admissions process and prepare students for various scenarios of their post-high school life.
Areas of college access it addresses:
Academic Readiness—Upward Bound offers tutoring, classes on writing, public speaking and SAT preparation, and advising in study skills in order to prepare students for academic success in higher education
Financial Readiness—Upward Bound participants receive advising in financial aid and assistance in form completion.
College Information Awareness—Through providing information on post-secondary education and exposing students to college campuses, Upward Bound meets students’ needs in terms of being informed of college options and college life.
